Segmental Block Retaining Walls in Pelham, AL — No Mortar, No Weak Joints

Interlocking concrete block walls built for Pelham yards — faster to install than natural stone, available in a range of colors and textures, and easier to repair in sections if it’s ever needed.

Our most-built wall type

Segmental block is the wall type we build most often in Pelham, and there’s a simple reason for it: the interlocking units are engineered to lock together without mortar, so there’s no mortar joint to crack and let water in. As part of our retaining wall services, we install segmental block walls sized for the slope and built with the same base and drainage standard as every wall we put in the ground.

Why Corona's

Why Pelham Homeowners Choose Segmental Block

Block gets picked more than any other wall type in Pelham for a reason — it holds up, and it doesn't take weeks to install.

No Mortar, No Weak Joints

Each block locks into the one below it with a pin or lip system, so there's no mortar joint to crack, shrink, or let water behind the wall over time.

Wide Range of Colors and Textures

Block comes in different finishes and tones, so we can match the wall to your home instead of it looking bolted on.

Faster Install, Lower Cost Than Stone

Uniform block goes in faster than hand-fitting natural stone, which usually means a shorter timeline and a lower price for the same square footage.

Local & Hands-On

How block walls are built

What Makes a Segmental Block Wall Hold Up

Segmental retaining wall units are precast concrete blocks designed with a pin, lip, or setback built into each piece, so every course locks onto the one below it without mortar. That interlocking system is what lets block walls flex slightly with ground movement instead of cracking the way a solid mortared wall can.

  • 01
Gravel BaseA compacted gravel base below grade gives the first course something solid and level to lock onto.
  • 02
Coursing & BatterEach row sets back slightly from the one below, building in a backward lean that helps the wall resist the soil pushing on it.
  • 03
Geogrid (Taller Walls)Walls over a few feet get horizontal geogrid tied between courses and into the backfill for extra holding strength.
  • 04
Cap & FinishCap block gets glued on top for a clean finished edge and to keep water from getting between the top course and whatever's behind it.

Because the units are uniform, a segmental block wall is also easier to work on later if it's ever needed. If one section settles or a block cracks, we can pull that section apart and reset it without tearing out the whole wall, which isn't always true with a mortared stone wall. It's one more reason segmental block is the wall type we build most often across our retaining wall projects in Pelham.
